election debate in colorado. the showdown between president obama and republican candidate mitt romney will take place at the university of denver. up like debates in the past, organizes say this event will be a little different. >> so what is different about the format is that we are dividing the hour and a half debate into six discussion segments. we think that those extended discussion periods will help the viewers around the world really get a sense of the candidates' views on the key issue. >> reporter: the economy is a key issue on the campaign trail but since colorado is one of the few states that appears to be weathering the national economic downturn, some won't be voting with their pocketbooks. >> i'm really up in the air as to who i'm going to vote for. i have my reasons for why i'm still up in the air and it comes down to do i want to see a better economy or lose rights. that is the way i look at it i don't i need to know that whichever one is actually listening to the average person, the one who has a fixed income, the one who has minimum wage. >> reporter: one poli

-elected, you will continue to see a middle class squeeze with incomes going down and prices going up. i'll get incomes going up again. >>> a health alert, a rare form of meningitis has killed at least four people, including two in maryland and virginia. the infection was not transmitted from person to person but rather through a steroid used to treat back pain. we have a report. >> reporter: a deadly meningitis outbreak hitting at least five states. about five people have died and dozens of others. >> some are improving and it is across the gamut. >> this involves the lining of the brain and central nervous system. the tennessee department of health saying the form of meningitis in these patients is not transmitted from person to person. cases under the investigation have no relation to the much more common forms of bacterial or viral meningitis. officials think a fungus is involved in the transmission. last week, the company issuing this steroid issued a recall. >> we are getting the best experts together to try and formulate what people think may be a good course of action to take.

matters most. aittle more than five weeks before the election, he leads mitt romney by two percentage points among likely voters nationwide. that's according to the latest washington post/abc news poll. the president leads his republican rival by 11 points among likely voters in swing states. that includes virginia, ohio, and florida. the president is taking a break from campaigning today to prepare for the first presidential debate on wednesday in denver. he's prepping in nevada, where he held this rally last night. he told supporters there in las vegas he hopes the debate serves as a conversation about what needs to be done to keep the country growing. the president will return to the campaign trail later this week. he is scheduled to visit fairfax county on friday. >>> mitt romney heads to denver today. the republican presidential nominee will hold a rally there this evening as he prepares for wednesday's debate. his campaign is hoping the debate gives romney a much needed boost given recent polls. new jersey governor chris christie calls it, quote, the restart of this campaign. >>
